The Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 168000, colloquially known as the "Triple Zero," is an exceptionally rare, vintage neo-transitional dive watch. It holds a legendary status among watch collectors because it features the shortest production run in Submariner history, lasting for only 7 to 9 months between 1987 and 1988. This reference served as Rolex’s real-world testing ground for advanced metallurgy before being quietly succeeded by the ubiquitous reference 16610.
The 904L Steel Pioneer: The 168000 was the first Submariner to introduce 904L stainless steel to the collection, replacing the industry-standard 316L steel. Rolex selected 904L because its higher chromium and nickel content offers superior corrosion resistance against saltwater and takes a higher polish. This metal would later be rebranded as "Oystersteel" across all modern models.
The Stealth Reference: Rolex never heavily marketed the change. In fact, the outer paperwork, boxes, and case backs from this era frequently labeled the watch as a standard "16800". The only place the extra "0" was officially stamped was directly on the watch case frame between the lugs.
