The Vintage Heuer Carrera Reference 3647 or 3648 (often designated as 3647S for the silver dial) is a highly coveted, rare and historically significant chronograph originally introduced by Jack Heuer in 1963.
  • Design Purity: The 3647 is celebrated for its minimalist aesthetic, prioritizing legibility with its clean tension-ring scale and omission of bulky bezels.
  • Gold-Plated Rarity (3648): While stainless steel variants are more common, the gold-plated models offer a distinct, dressier 1960s/1970s aesthetic.
  • Condition Checklist: When evaluating this vintage watch, pay close attention to the sharpness of the lug facets (which can soften from polishing) and ensure the gold plating hasn't worn through to the base metal on the edges.
  • Case Diameter: 36mm — a classic, versatile vintage proportion.
  • Case Material: Gold-plated stainless steel (often 20 microns) featuring the Carrera’s signature sharp, angular lugs.
  • Dial Layout: Dual-register "Bi-Compax" layout with a clean silver finish, a 35-minute or 45-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and running seconds at 9 o'clock.
  • Movement: Valjoux Caliber 92 — a high-grade, manual-winding column-wheel chronograph movement renowned for its smooth operation and reliability.
  • The "36mm" Footprint: The watch featured the definitive "60s Style" case crafted by case-maker Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA). It is celebrated for its thick, elongated, faceted lugs which gave the watch a strong geometric presence.
  • Gold-Plated Variant (Ref. 3648): While standard steel versions carried the 3647 reference, Heuer used the "8" suffix to denote gold-plated models (Ref. 3648). (Lately)...These featured a 20-micron gold-plated top case paired with a utilitarian, screw-down stainless steel case back.
  • The Tension Ring Innovation: Jack Heuer radically increased dial space by using an inner steel tension ring (rehaut) to hold the crystal. By moving the 1/5th second hashes onto this angled ring rather than printing them on the flat dial, the watch achieved its signature un-cluttered look.
  • Design Layout: Models featuring a plain silver face were designated with an "S" (e.g., 3647S or 3648S). The silver dial featured a beautiful sunburst finish with recessed sub-dials.
  • Sub-Dial Configuration: Because it skipped the 12-hour register at 6 o'clock, it utilized a balanced dual-register layout:
      • 9 o'clock: Running small seconds.
      • 3 o'clock: A 45-minute chronograph counter (giving it the "Carrera 45" moniker).
  • Evolution of the "SWISS" Text:
    • Very early variants (1963–1964) featured only "SWISS" at the bottom.
    • Variants produced after 1964/1965 transitioned to "T SWISS", indicating the transition to safer tritium luminescence on the plots and hands.
  • The driving heart of the Ref. 3647/3648 was the Valjoux Caliber 92. This column-wheel, manual-winding chronograph movement was highly respected for its reliability. It is distinct from the Valjoux 72 (used in the 2447) because it uses an oscillating pinion mechanism rather than a traditional engagement gear system, making it exceptionally smooth when starting the stopwatch.
