  The Reference 18038 introduced several major functional upgrades to the Day-Date line: 

• The Sapphire Crystal: It was the very first Day-Date reference to abandon the easily scratched acrylic plexiglass crystal in favor of a modern, flat scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

• Flat Dial Geometry: Unlike its predecessor (Ref. 1803), which featured a sloped "pie-pan" dial, the 18038 introduced a completely flat dial profile that standardized the look of modern Day-Dates.

• Caliber 3055 High-Beat Movement: The watch upgraded the internal engine frequency to 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph), increasing accuracy and introducing the "Single Quickset" mechanism.
  The Single Quickset Mechanism

However, adjusting the day of the week display at the 12 o'clock position still requires manually rotating the time hands through full 24-hour cycles past midnight.
